Purpose - This paper seeks to explain how clients deal effectively with challenges on private single dwelling projects by achieving learning. Design/methodology/approach - Eight in-depth interviews were conducted across five case studies of successful architect-client relationships. The narrative inquiry approach was used to establish the extent to which clients achieved learning and to describe the ways clients effectively dealt with project challenges. Findings - The findings indicate that clients achieved learning on all five case studies, enabling them to function with increasing competency over the course of projects. Client learning is a characteristic of successful relationships and is demonstrated through the following indicators: learning about the nature of the design/construction process, learning to take enjoyment in the new environment, and learning about the architectural milieu. Research limitations/implications - This research is limited to the investigation of the simplified architect-client relationship on private single dwelling projects. However, the conceptual model developed can be used to investigate relationships associated with other project types as they may offer different circumstances and challenges to the management of project relationships. Practical implications - A total of 69 per cent of architects in Australia spend some of their work time on residential projects, and therefore improvements in this area can have significant impact on a considerably large portion of the profession. Social implications - Problematic architect-client relationships resulting in the marginalisation of the profession can be detrimental to the quality of the environment. An understanding of characteristics underpinning successful architect-client relationships can thus contribute to the quality of the built environment. Originality/value - This research identified ways in which clients effectively dealt with difficulties on projects by achieving learning to achieve successful architect-client relationships.

This research investigates the widening gap between architects and clients and the associated problems in the management of their relationship. Drawing theory from sociological and psychological perspectives, it demystifies the architect-client relationship by providing an account of how the profession's endeavour to maintain social distinction by creating silent boundaries around itself has led to an increased distancing between the architectural community and those clients not trained as professional architects. It raises several questions: to what extent can the boundaries between the architect and client be blurred? What is it about some relationships that are an enabler for success? Are there characteristics that underpin successful relationships? Using the narrative enquiry approach, eight in-depth interviews were conducted across five case studies of successful architect-client relationships, revealing ways in which clients effectively dealt with uncertainties on projects. The findings demonstrate that successful architect-client relationships are characterized by client learning and that over the course of the relationships architects supported clients to learn new skills, helping them overcome difficulties faced on projects. One of the most significant outcomes is that it demonstrates the potential of facilitating client learning to contribute to the development of successful architect-client relationships.

The study analyzed the role of interpersonal communication in client counseling environments, establishing emotional stability, and building lasting effective counselor-client relationship. Numerous studies reviewed indicate that the quality of interpersonal communication between counselors/psychologists and clients is significant in improving clients’ self-esteem, emotional stability, interactional effectiveness, and responsive engagement. An extended literature review was conducted to analyze past communication patterns between counselors/psychologists and clients to evaluate the role of human communication in the quality of therapy and in the results achieved. Based on content analysis of clients-counselors interactions and relationships, review of related literature, and personal interviews and discussions, it was determined that effective interpersonal communication is critically important in achieving clients’ high level of recovery, speedy compliance, and enhanced self-awareness. This study clearly establishes that communication is a significant part of a successful counseling practice. Additionally, productive counseling largely depends on communication competence - the ability to articulate instructions and procedures clearly, persuasively, and consistently both verbally and nonverbally.

The veterinary market in today's world is forever evolving, putting more pressure on the veterinary team and practice. Clients are expecting more and more from the veterinary team in terms of diagnosis and treatment, meaning performing, running and delivering test results the same day. The veterinary nurse's role is becoming more diverse as treatments become more sophisticated, while still complementing the everyday workings of the veterinary practice. The fundamental principle of running a successful nursing clinic is to nurture the client-practice relationship, provide education, and generate profit. The use of the adapted Cambridge-Calgary model can also assist veterinary nurses in the running of successful nursing clinics.

The doctor-patient relationship has been widely studied in biomedicine. However, little research has focused on similar provider-client relationships in holistic healthcare forms. Based on ethnographic research with acupuncture clients and practitioners, the authors found that participants used specific models of health to understand and develop subsequent models of interaction, and in doing so, provided a clear critique of biomedicine. This article offers a brief overview of major models of healthcare, including biomedical, biopsychosocial, and holistic. The authors present current models of interaction that have been used to understand the biomedical doctor-patient relationship, and discuss the utility of both sets of models as they relate to the ethnographic observations. Although a particular model of health (biomedical or holistic) does not necessitate a particular model of health interaction (paternalism, consumerism, or collaboration), participants' attempts to tie these 2 realms together are important to understanding practitioner-patient relationships in all healthcare situations.

We report on a survey of auditor-client relationship problems in developed audit market in Malaysia. The study investigates client perspectives and views on important auditing process issues, valued added audit activities for client organisations and auditor rotation. Clients viewed high fees, excessive audit time requirements, difficulty in meeting auditor's requests and audit personnel difficulties in understanding the business due to a lack of adequate audit professionals' experience as problems. From the audit perspective, the study explores audit client acceptance factors, independence issues and common problems encountered with the clients.

The present study unpacks an important dimension of clinical practice from the therapists' vantage point. We interviewed 26 therapists in private practice about how the personal relationship with the client works from their perspective and conducted a grounded theory analysis. Three categories emerged. One refers to scope, aims and corollaries of the connection with the client; a second to preventing harm and managing drawbacks; and a third to taking therapeutic advantage of challenges related to closeness. Together, these categories form a model that describes how the close connection modifies therapeutic effects and generates challenges the therapist needs to deal with. The closer the dyad, the easier therapists will aifect and be affected by the client. Therapists try to direct closeness to where it can nourish client process without harming the relationship, the client or themselves, and when closeness backfires, they may still try to harness uninvited effects for the benefit of therapy. This model concerning therapists' lived experience is offered to inform research on the therapist-client relationship and as a contribution to clinical competency models.

Background: Establishing a working alliance has been found to be of great importance for the outcome of professional interventions for people diagnosed with severe mental illnesses. Aim: The aim of the present study was to analyse the concrete actions of helpful professionals in establishing a working alliance. Method: Interviews with 58 persons diagnosed with severe mental illness who were in a recovery process or had recovered were analysed using Grounded Theory. Results: The core category that emerged from the analysis was termed going beyond'. It was constituted on three subcategories: challenging the rationality of the institutions, restoring the professional as a person and restoring the user as a person. Conclusion: Users' experience-based knowledge about helpful professionals calls into question the traditional view of professional roles.

Felix P. Biestek's book The Casework Relationship has an exalted location in the literature and practice of social work. The diversity of the lived reality as well as practice notwithstanding, it remains one of the most visited reference points in social work literature. The present article aims to review, understand, and question the client-worker relationship, which has remained as common sense to social work teaching and practice. The naturalness of this relationship is questioned through the Gramscian framework of hegemony.
